A little girl named Zoe sitting in a chair and drinking tea while smiling.

Meet Zoe

Zoe's story is one of immense courage and resilience. Born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), Zoe underwent four open-heart surgeries by the time she was just four years old. Her heart, a constant warrior, required a pacemaker which has been replaced three times since. Despite these challenges, Zoe faced each day with a smile that could light up the darkest room.

When Zoe was 14, she suffered a cardiac arrest that led to a severe ischemic stroke, impacting six parts of her brain. The 28 minutes of CPR saved her life but caused significant further damage to her heart. With her heart function at less than 20% and her body in congestive heart failure, our options became heartbreakingly limited. The possibility of an AICD (an internal defibrillator) posed more risks than benefits, and a heart transplant was deemed too painful and invasive given Zoe’s condition.

Throughout her journey, Zoe's strength never wavered, even as her ability to communicate and perform daily activities faded. She had dreams of celebrating her 18th birthday in Paris, sipping tea and shopping for fancy French clothes.

As we spent our final days together, our focus was on love and comfort. We surrounded Zoe with every bit of warmth and care we could muster, holding her close and cherishing each moment.

In Zoe’s honor, a portion of the sales from my book and the proceeds from my counseling services are donated to Zoe Beyla Crouse Memorial Foundation. This foundation supports families navigating similar journeys, offering them the resources and hope that sustained us.
